Other Ideas
- Try your own vinaigrette
ideas - e.g. add grated parmesan to Balsamic vinegar and olive oil, or try
grated orange peel with a red wine vinegar and olive oil. The general rule is 3
parts oil to 1 part vinegar. With some vinegars (such as sweeter ones like
balsamic) a ration of 2 to 1 is better. You may have to experiment to find what
is right for your taste.
- Breads - have a variety -
rye, multigrain, sour dough, French or Italian loaves.
- Add unsalted nuts - cashews,
pecans, almond, walnuts (pecans and walnuts are particularly good toasted) to
salads or vegetables.
- Deep frying - again you can
indulge yourself, since you are not eating animal fat. Use peanut or other
vegetable oil to deep fry French Fries or tempura vegetables.
- Try a pressure cooker
for cooking vegetables. It is very fast and the flavour of the vegetables
is preserved as they are not immersed in water. Today's pressure cookers are
very safe, inexpensive, and will last "forever." They also consume less
energy.
- Have a glass of wine with
dinner (no guilt there.)
Mock Meats
For a long time, we did not use mock meats,
but recently have found some that we like. Following is a list of those that we
have tried and enjoyed:
- Montreal Smoked Wheat This
is an amazing vegan alternative to the famous Montreal smoked meat. It looks
and tastes the same and is absolutely delicious on rye bread with mustard and a
dill pickle. It is apparently available in some stores in Canada now, but
according to their web site they will try to ship it anywhere in North
America.
- Lightlife Smart Cultlets
- "Salisbury Steak".We serve this with fried onions, mashed potatoes (
mashed with vegetable broth and a little dijon mustard) and peas for a
delicious vegan meal that is very easy to make. We also use their
GimmeLean Beef Flavored Soy Protein to make veggie burgers
- Veggie Patch Portabello
Mushroom Balls - delicious on pizza or with spaghetti sauce.
- Yves Veggie - wonderful
products such as their veggie dog and ground "round" used in some recipes on
this site. Their mock salami slices and breakfast links are also quite
delicious.
